YOUNG Newcastle artists are invading Sydney this week.
Abstract painter James Drinkwater, 20, pictured left, will follow-up his sold-out solo effort Vintage at Damien Minton Gallery last month with Sea Foam Vogue at the prestigious Woollahra space, Maunsell Hughes Gallery, opening on Saturday at 3pm.
Curator Dominic Maunsell says he recalls art guru Barry Stern telling him about meeting a 19-year-old Brett Whiteley, brimming with talent, before becoming one of Australia's greats. He tells The Word Drinkwater is "an extraordinarily energetic, skilful, charming and clever young painter with a great future".
Another promising young artist, Mulbring 19-year-old Rhiana Griffith, right, follows up her debut solo exhibition at Tighes Hill Gallery this year with a one-month showing of A Month In Kaos at Surry Hills Cafe 249 Art Gallery from Saturday.
